Introduction to self
I count myself blessed to be given the opportunity to pursue my tertiary studies in a field that I am passionate about. Hospitality is more than just pasting a smile on my face; it is about connecting with people – most of whom I won’t know – and making their day better by treating them like the treasures they are. I am not only excited to grow in my skills but also grow as a person with a big heart for people.

Personal reflection
It was uplifting to be able to do something small that was a start of something big in saving the environment. Not many people realise how dire the situation is with environmental degradation. 6 billion kg in waste is dumped into oceans every year, contaminated water causes the demise of a child every 8 seconds, and 80% of forests in the world are already lost. If the goal of human beings is to try to make our presence on Earth as unobtrusive as possible, we’re certainly doing a spectacular job at failing.

When figuring out what project my team and I could carry out to save the earth, I immediately thought, “Anything but picking up rubbish!” It wasn’t that I was squeamish about rubbish-picking. In actual fact, I am a strong advocate of anti-littering and practice the belief almost religiously in my daily life. I believe it is the least I could for the Mother Nature when it is already suffocating with so much waste buried in its lands. 2.12 billion tons of waste worldwide is dumped every year. If all this waste was put on trucks they would go around the world 24 times!

Therefore, I thought that it would be so much more encouraging to add something (i.e. plants) that saves the earth rather than removing something (i.e. rubbish) that destroys it. And what better way to add colour to life and Mother Nature than flowers? I was glad my team members wholeheartedly agreed with my suggestion and were excited to start on our first project to ‘Save the Earth’.

As it was my first time getting my hands dirty (literally!) in a garden, I was glad it was with my few friends who didn’t exactly have a green thumb either. It didn’t help that we had to do this in full view of students and staff at INTI. Nevertheless, we were able to help, guide and correct each other as and when needed so we could achieve our final goal together. It made fumbling around to figure out the right steps a barrel of laughs instead of a mortifying event. I was reminded of the need and importance of teamwork and collaboration with others to make something a success. It was humbling to know I had a group of friends who were supportive of everyone’s talents and weaknesses as well as of any endeavour that was pursued together.

To my team members and I, doing something small such as planting roses in a garden is a symbol of our promise to save the earth, one step at a time. Making a commitment to nurturing and growing these roses will be akin to making a commitment in changing our lifestyles to become more eco-friendly and changing our attitudes to love Earth. My first experience with gardening as well as my commitment to saving the environment was made much more meaningful and memorable with the presence of my quirky but fun team members.

Personal reflection
During the fourteenth week of MPU Presentation Skills in INTI International College, Subang Jaya. Students were given a task by Mr. Helme, our lecturer which include creating a video and a group e-portfolio using a website or a blog in conjunction to the project called ‘Saving the Planet’. All students were allocated into groups, and therefore I was placed in group 1. Group 1 consists of six people, which are Cheryl, Lexin, Jing Wei, Jing San and Sherrie.

Trees are an important part of society and community. Along with furnishing us with the basic essentials for life like food, oxygen, shelter, medicine, tools, they also satisfy the needs created by our modern ways of living. The value of trees has been increasing ever since more and more benefits are being discovered. Trees provide us shade and shelter; help in moderating the climate, preserving soil, supporting wildlife, reducing pollution and in many other ways. Trees create an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere around us.  They make our landscape look beautiful, indeed priceless. However, the population explosion and expansion of commercial areas has resulted in massive pruning of trees. People are continuously cutting trees for developmental activities like making houses, commercial buildings, parking lots and we are moving a step further in destroying the planet by loosing the most valuable resource of the environment.

Have we ever thought what would happen if there were no trees on Earth? Global warming will increase leading to melting of glaciers and a rise in sea level. This will disturb the entire chain of life on earth. The water cycle will get disturbed, many species of animals will loose their habitats and we will in turn loose the huge bio-diversity that we are now proud of. What would we provide to the generations yet unborn with, if there were no parks, playgrounds and backyards? How will they feel connected to Nature and Mother Earth? Trees are the lungs through which we breathe. Where would oxygen come for mankind to breathe? Are we sure that we can settle with more buildings, more commercial houses, more paved streets and less of trees? It is time to re-think the action of cutting down trees for development of a nation. It is difficult or rather impossible to sustain life on Earth without trees and it is not possible to find alternatives to trees. It is also our responsibility to pass on to the future generations, the benefits we were provided with, by nature. Therefore, our group decided to plant flowers as a start at Metro Block School of Hospitality’s student garden in INTI and wish to further bring awareness to other people especially the young generations of the society. We wish to further emphasize on the saying ‘Plant a tree seed, save the planet’ by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF, 2014). So, it is now the time to save the trees. Our small efforts can save the environment. All it needs is a start!

In a nutshell, during the past one week of on going planning for the project on saving the planet. I have learned and experienced so many things throughout the period. I have experienced and gained confidence, intellectual development, hands-on skills, organisation and time management. For instance, time management is important when completing every task given in a timely manner. Also, learning to listen and be responsible to the task given by leader is important so that task can be successfully completed. Furthermore, I learnt how to overcome being camera shy when taking the videos for several takes and gained self-awareness and critical thinking skills, in the sense of listening and accepting the opinions and criticisms of all group members. I have become aware of others and how to work effectively in a team. Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge Mr. Helme, for his kind help, criticism and guidance as well as the cooperation of my 5 group-mates to finish this project.

Personal reflection
Our group consists of six people have required to conduct a project on saving the planet during the 14th week of the course structure for the subject “MPU 3223 Presentation Skills”. We had done some gardening activities in IICS’S SOHOS garden in Inti College Subang Jaya. The objectives of the project on saving the planet are making the garden more beautiful and colourful, hoping that this project will be a step forward to a greener campus and the most important are to build aware mong students to conduct small steps in going green and to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees, whether in the classroom or around the world.

According to Rachel Carson, an author of Silent Spring, she mentioned that the history of life on Earth has been a history of interaction between living things and surroundings. Human activities such as throwing rubbish in the public or throw waste into the river actually have bad impacts towards the environment. Caring for the environment and implement actions to take care of the environment is important. A clean environment is essential for healthy living. The more we do not care about our environment, the environment will become polluted. When the environment is polluted, this will cause harmful effect on our health. For example, air pollution like haze can lead to respiratory disease and cancer due to the inhalation of the harmful chemicals and toxins. Unfortunately, many people have lost their lives due to these diseases. According to Bobby McLeod, a poet, he mentioned that human health is impossible when the earth is sick and polluted and in order to heal our health, we must heal our planet first. For example, we can use recycling method which minimise pollution. When we recycle the garbage from used plastic bottles and plastic products, we can get to save the earth and even millions of lives from the harmful effects of pollution.

In this situation, the kirk principle which is participation should be applied to save the planet. Participation is connection discussion in decision-making process, teamwork and other measures in an organization. In order to save the environment, everyone include the government, schools and the community should participate together to save the environment. For example, “gotong-royong” and recycling campaign.

In conclusion, I realized that it our responsibility to take care the environment for ourselves, the nature and the future generation. I would like to thank my lecturer, Mr. Helme or giving us this opportunity to conduct the project on saving the planet. Furthermore, I would like to thank my group leader and my group members who spend a lot of time on this project although their schedule is busy. We successfully manage to do gardening which made our project completely successful.

Introduction to self
I am studying Bachelor of Business in International Hotel and Resort Management. The reason of I am choosing hospitality is I felt that hospitality is a wonderful pathway for me to help my family business. My parent are running a Chinese restaurant at Kajang, Semenyih. The name of the restaurant call Yip Sheng. This name is created by my father, Yip Sheng is a pronoun of Cantonese that mean the sales increase continuously. I believe that one day my parent will hand over their business to me. So this motivate me to choose hospitality as my major. My goal is 5 years after my graduation, I wish I could work as a manager in Burj Al Arab or Underwater Hotel in Dubai.

Personal reflection
My group members include Cheryl, Chia Jing Wei, Chong Jing San, Aw Su Ni, Wong Ching Yee and myself Cheong Le Xin. On 20th November 2015, our lecturer Mr Helme has given us assignment regard on online collaboration and presentation. There is a project called Save the Earth among the assignment. This assignment is a project on saving the planet. It is requiring us to produce a video of our group work on the work. Therefore, our group shoots the video on 24th November 2015.

The activity we have chosen was gardening. We planned to plant rose at SOHOS Garden. The objective of our group doing this was to create awareness toward the students at INTI College Subang. We hope the student can know the importance of protecting the environment. Environment was belonging to everyone. To be a step forward to a greener environment, it was requiring the participation of all people. Students were the pillars on our country in the future. Therefore, to have a greener environment, education to students was a good begin. Besides that, we also want to make the SOHOS Garden become more colourful. We as students apart of INTI college. We have the responsibility to protect and save the environment of the college.

In this activity, I have learned cooperation and responsible was important while doing this activity. When planting the rose, we divide in two groups. The first group was in charge of dig soil and place seed, and the second group was adding fertilizer and watering. By separating this two group we in charge different job. We have to cooperate to make the activity go smooth successfully. If we did not cooperate effectively, the process of planting the rose will not achieve the best result. And also the cooperation between each other can make the planting activity finish early. So that we don’t need to NG and hence retake the video.

In term of responsible, each of us has own task to work on the whole project. Besides produce video, we also required to create a blog to report the progress of our activity. Our group leader Cheryl separate part for us and guide us how to do. The responsible of Cheryl made us work on the project more effective. Moreover, the members also submit their part on time. This also showed the responsible of each member. If we did not responsible on our task, the project will not complete on time. Therefore, the responsible in our group make me feel proud to be a part of the group.

In conclusion, I hope that the activity we have done to the college will create the awareness of students in the college successfully. And I also hope that I can join a group like this again in my future assignment group. Lastly, LET'S GO GREEN TOGETHER!!

Introduction to self

I am a 19 years old girl come from Sandakan, Sabah. My hometown is a natural city that I love the most. Also, I grew up in a loving and fun family. I am currently pursuing Blue Mountain Hospitality program in IICS.

Personal reflection
Our group, including me, Jing Wei, Le Xin, Suni, Cheryl and Sherrie are required to conduct a project on saving the planet according to the 14th week of course structure of MPU 3223 Presentation Skills. To save the planet, our group have decided to plant roses in the IICS’s SOHOS garden.

There are many ways in the world human impacts are affecting the environment. After our group have carried out this project, I have learned that there are many methods that human can do to preserve the environment for the next generations. By doing this project, we hope to make the garden more colourful and beautiful, step a forward to a greener campus, build awareness among students to take small steps in going green as well as to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees, whether in the classroom or around the world. What I amazed from the saving the planet project is actually it only needs a small action such as switch off the lights when you are not using or even planting flowers to reduce the human impacts on environment. Everyone has his owns responsibility to participate in environment conservation. This is because the planet is not belonging to a certain person, but for all of us. It is such as a “big shelter” for all of us. So, if we are not taking care of our own shelter, who else is going to do that for us? And also, save the planet to the next generations. The next generations deserve to be having chances to utilize the resources. We, as the elder generations, indeed do not have the privilege to deprive their rights.

Furthermore, throughout the project, I have improved my time management skill and how to cooperation with my group members. Due to we are having the assignments in the same time, I have learned how to schedule my tasks so that I can complete them in time. During the project, I also learned to cooperate with my group members as we discuss about the problems with each other and each of us did actually provide some solutions to conquer the obstacles. I enjoy the moment when we achieved the goal and sharing the moment through ups and downs. I would also like to acknowledge my group leader, Cheryl. She managed to distribute the tasks for us and lead us to accomplish the project. Last but not least, I appreciated the opportunity given by my Presentation Skills’ lecturer, Mr Helme to carry out this project with my group members.

Introduction to self
My name is Wong Ching Yee, I am 20 year old this year. I am currently studying in Inti International College Subang Jaya, Degree in Event Management and Marketing, where I focus on gaining skills to hold an event, as well as learning marketing skills. I used to live in Kelana Jaya since I was a child, but back in 2014, I have moved to Bandar Sunway with my family. During my free time, I work part time job to lighten the financial burden of my family. I have worked in the shopping mall before, and am currently working as a part time administrator in an education center. I believe I am a fast learner and it helps me in my daily life, as well as my studies and part time job. However, I sometimes find it difficult to communicate with people, as I do not know how to express myself precisely.

Personal reflection
Towards the end of this semester, in MPU 3223, Presentation Skills, Mr. Helme gave all of us a project: we need to work in a group to create a website or blog with an E-Portfolio of the group members. The main title of this project is “Save the Planet”. Our group decided to plant roses in the SOHOS Garden in our campus.

Nowadays, especially our generation, we do not have much time to care for the environment. We spend most of our time with technology. Therefore, we are doing this project to save the environment and we hope to create a green campus in Subang Jaya. Besides, we hope to raise awareness in the community, and we shall all put in some effort to create a clean and beautiful environment. If every student in our campus can put in a little effort into protecting the environment, we can sooner see the changes.

I am very honored for having the chance to be part of my group in this meaning project. This project is mainly about planting roses in our college campus. After some discussion, we decided to carry out the project on 24 November 2015, and our group leader has prepared the important tools and materials. We started planting the roses around 1 pm. Before that, we already gain permission from the management of the college. We started with digging holes with the tools, followed by putting in the flower seeds and fertilizer, then, we buried everything and watered the plant. We filmed a video throughout the process, and later uploaded it to our blog. The weather in the afternoon was very hot, but I enjoyed working with my awesome group members. They are Cheryl, Jing Wei, Su Ni, Jing San, and Le Xin. We came from different places and different courses. They are studying Hotel Management whereas I am studying Event Management and Marketing. We do not know each other beforehand, but we worked well together. They are so motivated, helpful, and efficient. I am glad that I have a great opportunity to work with such group members, as they are so fun to work with. Moreover, we are all looking forward for the roses to grow in the future.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, we are now more aware of the importance of protecting the environment after completing this project. We find it very meaningful to be able to do something for the mother earth, as a human being. Starting from now, we will do our best to protect and restore the environment. For example, we will practice reduce, reuse, and recycle in our daily lives. Besides, we also managed to enhance our spirit of teamwork by doing this project, as we worked together to do discussion, plant the roses, create the blog, and produce the video. We appreciate each other for putting in effort to make this project possible, no matter how small it is. Lastly, we hope that our main objectives to carry out this project can be realized in the future.
